With the expansion of urban India, there are a very few pockets of rural India that still maintain the traditional lifestyle. Recently, we visited a quaint man-made heritage village explored the typical nuances of rustic countryside curated under a common roof called Surajgarh Gurugram. The ‘urban village’ promotes the concept of rural adventures and folk entertainment in a lush resort concept and has something new for kids and city dwellers who wish to experience the joys of Indian villages.

Situated on the Golf Course Extension, Gurugram, this resort is spread over a magnanimous area of over 15 acres and gets a sizeable footfall over the weekend. The local stuff, dressed in traditional Haryanavi attire usually welcome the visitors with warmth and royal hospitality by playing drums and folk instruments at the entry gate. The green patch of land, in the middle of the concrete city, is created to promote the ‘village in a city’ concept and attracts people from Gurugram, Delhi, and Noida all throughout the week. The place is also designed to attract corporate outings, where co-workers can experience Indian heritage and culture, and bond over local food and games.

The village portrays a blend of cultural and gastronomical influences from nearby states of Haryana and Rajasthan. In terms of architecture, the huge gates and fort-like structures are perfect spots for pictures with family and friends. One can find local Rajasthani artisans and dancers perched in various zones of the resort, and if you are looking for handicraft memorabilia you can pick up some beautiful décor items made by rural artists. For large gatherings and picnics, one can also pre-book activities such as camel cart rides, tractor and bullock cart rides, head massage, mud bath, henna sessions, tube well bath, and pottery making sessions with the artisans.

“Surajgarh has brought the fusion of real Indian heritage villages of Rajasthan and Haryana in the middle of a metro city. For all those who want a short break from their busy lifestyles and enjoy the vibrant culture of ethnic Indian life, this place offers the blend of serene villages and peaceful rural life experiences through a soul-satisfying journey,” mentions Anil Yadav, Director, Surajgarh Gurugram. The unique ‘Khaan-paan’ section in the resort serves delicious and health food, inspired by village cuisines and cooked slowly on mud baked stoves by chefs from Rajasthan. After a long day, the taste of pure organic food prepared from fresh ingredients will leave you relaxed, and the enchanting folk dance will take you back in time.
